Handmade Gifts Thinking Of You

Doodlebug Design Sweet Summer Gift Box

Happy Tuesday Everyone! I have a fun project to share today. How many of your friends aren’t papercrafters? if you’re like me, you have a lot! One thing they do have in common though is adoring cards I’ve made. So I love to make gift boxes filled with handmade cards, and they are so well received! There’s something about anything handmade… well, it’s just the best!

I kept this project really simple, and I did something I’ve never done before- I used no stamps or inks! All of my supplies were cardstock, pattern paper, ephemera, paper scraps, and glue. Since we are in the Summer months, I chose Doodlebug Design Inc Sweet Summer 6×6 paper pad, and matching Odds & Ends. As usual, Doodlebug did not hold back on all the cuteness!!

They’re vellum, so I was able to put them on colored cardstock to make them whatever color I wanted them to be. Because the Odds & Ends are so bright and cheerful, I was able to go through my paper scraps and make cardbases out of matching colored cardstock, another thing I rarely do. (I love my trusty ole white cardbases!)

I made 6 cards, which took about an hour. I used Lawn Fawn Glue Tube to adhere everything together.

Now onto the box… be sure to pick out a strong heavyweight cardstock, nothing flimsy. I chose 100# cardstock by My Favorite Things. Its solid!  The measurements for the box is: Bottom- 7 7/8 x 6 1/2. The top is 16th of an inch bigger on both sides: 7 15/16 x 6 9/16. (I write B on the bottom and T on the top so I don’t get them confused.) Score at 1 inch on all four sides on both papers.

On all four corners, cut straight on the folded line to the second scored line. be sure to cut on the 7 7/8 side so as to have stronger sides. Then cut a small narrow triangle out to make tabs, as shown in the picture. Be sure to cut a narrow triangle off the ends too so the tabs don’t stick out of the box when you glue everything together.

Once everything is cut on both papers, add adhesive to the tabs. I use a strong double-sided adhesive and glue. The glue gives me some room to wiggle the paper around if I need to for a perfect fit.

Now its time to decorate the box. Its easier to decorate now before adhering everything together. I used strips of pattern paper for the sides of the top, and coordinating papers for the top and bottom. (You don’t have to cover the bottom, I just did because I had written out the dimensions.)

Once everything was glued down, I assembled the box, put the cards and envelopes in it, and put the top on. It was a perfect fit! I threw in left over stickers. They can be used as cute envelope closers. This is a fun, inexpensive project that your friends and family will love. I hope you are able to try this out. If you do, be sure to share your project on social media, and use #drivebycrafts tag so we can see what you’ve made!
